Edward Named PDL Player of the Week
Scored four goals in Rovers' 5-4 victory against Cincinnati
USL News Release
Thursday, July 21, 2011
TAMPA, Fla. - United Soccer Leagues today announced the USL Premier Development League Team of the Week for Week 11 of the season, honoring River City Rovers midfielder Albert Edward as Player of the Week after he had four goals in the Rovers' 5-4 victory against Cincinnati last Saturday, ending the club's inaugural home schedule on a high note.
Edward had a pair of goals coming into the game, but after Lwandiso Gonya had opened the scoring for River City, only for the Kings to take a 2-1 lead, Edward took over. He scored one in the first half and then added another three in 15 minutes following the break to give the Rovers a lead they were able to hold on to.
Orange County forward David Ponce also had a standout week, scoring a hat trick in the Blue Star's 6-3 win against the Los Angeles Legends, while Fresno's Tyler Reinhart helped his side secure a playoff berth and move to the top of the Southwest Division standings with a pair of goals in the Fuego's 3-1 victory against Southern California.
Other players had key contributions as their sides closed in on the PDL playoffs, which begin next week, with Long Island's Danny Kramer scoring the game-winning goal as the Rough Riders took a 2-0 victory against New Jersey to move on top of the Mid Atlantic Division, while Chris Tweed-Kent's goal kept the Carolina Dynamo on course for the playoffs in the South Atlantic Division with a 2-0 victory against Fredericksburg.
Juan de dios Ibarra had a goal and assist as Laredo kept up their pursuit of the Mid South Division crown, while Anthony Putrus also had a goal for 2010 PDL Finalist Thunder Bay as it defeated WSA Winnipeg 3-0 to remain in contention for the Heartland Division title.

Saturday, July 16, 2011
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Albert Edward scored four goals in a remarkable night of soccer that saw the River City Rovers win their last home game of the club's inaugural USL Premier Development League season 5-4 against the Cincinnati Kings on Saturday at Centurion Soccer Field.
The game began with an exciting start by the Rovers. In the seventh minute Ace Gonya scored the first goal with an assist by Ryan Smith. Cincinnati hit back quickly, though, as Kemar Jackson tied the game a minute later before Andre Sharpe gave the Kings the lead in the 19th minute.
Edward began his onslaught of scoring in the 37th minute off an assist by Sam Brooks, but the Kings again struck back through Alex Hadley to give them a 3-2 halftime lead.
That advantage would be short-lived as just two minutes into the second half Edward scored his second. He added his third and fourth of the game before the hour-mark, the final goal again assisted by Brooks as the Rovers took a 5-3 lead. The Rovers delivered a total of 20 shots on goal for the night, the Kings finished with 11.
The Kings pressed to get back in the game, Rovers goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk making a split-second deflection off a Kings free kick in the 69th minute. The Kings pulled a goal back through Dylan Lax in the 90th minute, but the Rovers were able to hold on to take victory, which also saw 17-year-old Peter May for his debut in the second half.
"We had more of the game in the first half, but we didn't convert our opportunities, and we committed a few defensive mistakes," Rovers coach Muhamed Fazlagic said. "After the second half, we addressed weaknesses in the Kings defensive, and Albert Edward and the team beautifully executed the plays."
This was the final home game for the Rovers but if you are in for a road trip we have a couple of games coming up just a couple of hours away! Check the "Schedule" widget
